“Dirty Laundry” Gets Whole New Meaning at New St.Petersburg Speakeasy

Everyone hates mundane laundry chores that consume our lives, but this speakeasy might have you look at the phrase “Dirty Laundry” a little different. Fasten your seatbelts, ladies and gentlemen, because there’s a new hidden bar in town. Dirty Laundry opened on Friday, November 19th in the Grand Central District at 1742 Central Ave. After only being open a few days, the spot is already making headlines for its chic appearance, tasty food and Cuban-inspired drinks.

Dirty Laundry is a café and “laundromat” open daily at 8 a.m., selling goodies like sodas, coffee and sandwiches. But at noon on Saturdays and Sundays, make your way to the payphone in the back of the building where you’ll be given a secret password. Next, you’ll be asked to punch the code into the payphone before heading to washing machine number two which opens up into the “Havana nights vibe” bar and eatery.

Making headlines is no new feat for Stephen Schrutt, owner of Dirty Laundry and the Hunger & Thirst Restaurant Group. With hot spots all over the Bay Area like The Avenue, No Vacancy and Parks & Rec, Schrutt is known for developing trendy spots, but why a speakeasy in St.Pete?

When asked this question, he explained that he has been dreaming of opening a hidden bar in St.Petersburg for years. The Cuban inspiration for the interior and menu was something that came from his childhood growing up in Tampa with frequent visits to Ybor City. Schrutt was so excited about the place that he kept it a secret even from his family until the night before it opened.
